It was an eventful Opening Day for the 2010 season. Not only did the Red Sox win in exicting fashion the night before the rest of the league kicked it off, but a lot of the big names made big noises on a day so sunny even Hitler would have enjoyed it.
Albert Pujols, for the second time in his career, hit two homers on the first day of the season- both off of high fastballs.
Jason Heyward, the 20-yr old OF phenom for the Braves, hit a 3-run homer in his first major league at bat. The fans went absolutely bonkers, and with good reason. Heyward has the skill to turn the franchise around and reestablish Atlanta as a perennial playoff contender. My mom asked me what I wanted her to bring me back from her trip to South Carolina in two weeks and I told her a Heyward t-shirt. I can't wait to see what I end up with.
Roy Halladay and Tim Lincecum, the two favorites to vie for the NL Cy Young this season, were both dominant in their first starts of 2010. Doc went 7, striking out 9, walking 2 and allowing an earned run. Lincecum was even better, working 7 frames as well to the tune of 7 Ks, no BBs, 4 measly singles and no runs allowed. Granted, they were facing the Nationals and the Astros, respectively.
Despite being no-hit by Shaun Marcum for 6 1/3, the Texas Rangers stormed back in the later innings to beat the Jays 5-4. Jarrod Saltallamachiavelli had a walk-off single in the ninth off Jays closer Jason Frasor.
Josh Beckett surfed youtube for videos under the label "How to throw a curve ball" and signed a 4-yr/$68m contract with the Red Sox.
Besides Halladay's Philly introduction, there were a few other big nights from guy's that switched cities in the off season.
Chone Figgins drew 2 walks, stole 2 bases, and scored twice in his first game for the M's.
Johnny Damon went 2-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI for the Tigers.
Ben Sheets pitched for the Oakland A's.
Hideki Matsui, the fantasy man nobody wanted, went 2-4 with a HR and 2 RBI in his first start for the Angels.
Placido Polanco made the biggest impact for his new team, going 3-5 with a grand slam and 6 RBIs for the NL champion Phillies.

My top three predictions for what kind of shirt you end up with from South Carolina:
ReplyDeleteCraig "Ironhead" Heyward jersey - I know that you're not a football fan, but I would consider a shirt featuring the late running back of equal value to a Jason Heyward t-shirt. And since he played for the nearby-ish Atlanta Falcons, his jerseys should be plentiful at any Craig Heyward-themed department store.
Haywood Community College sweatshirt - Located in nearby Clyde, NC, this school is teaming up with the Haywood Correctional Center to host a Bluegrass/Gospel Jam for make benefit Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run in two weeks. I think crossing the northern border to attend this event should be tops on your mom's to-do list.
Thomas Heyward Jr. puffy shirt - This eighteenth century politician signed the Declaration of Independence after being elected to the Continental Congress by, you guessed it, the fine people of South Carolina. He wasn't exactly a fighter, as he was captured by the British during the siege of Charleston while in command of a militia force, but his enduring popularity (I can only assume) should make finding a Heyward Jr. jersey a piece of cake.
I think I'd like the puffy
